The Tajik people of China are an Eastern Iranian ethnic group that reside primarily in the Pamir region of Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County in Xinjiang. During the Tang Dynasty, the female poet, punished and sent to the border, retreated to the western outskirts of Chengdu along the Huanhua Creek for a long time. Many papermakers worked by the creek, and because the poet found the large size of the paper inconvenient for writing her small poems, she instructed craftsmen to make them smaller. Fond of the color red, she used rouge mixed with water to create small red sheets, on which she inscribed her verses. She would then give these sheets to those she deemed suitable. People at that time considered receiving her sheets an honor. These sheets, colored like peach blossoms, came to be known as ‘Peach Blossom Sheets.’ Later generations simply named them ‘Xue Tao Sheets.’ This is also the origin of the common phrase ‘red sheets’ in later poetry.
