“With a heart filled with excitement and infinite gratitude, I once again gather with all of you at the Multicultural Dance Festival organized by the Pan America Chinese Dance Alliance. Among us are respected teachers, trailblazers active in dance education and choreography, talented and spirited young dancers, dedicated staff members who tirelessly work behind the scenes of the Dance Festival, and the audience and family members, supporting us throughout our journeys, who have stepped into the theater today. It is through dance that we come together and move forward as a united force for our passion and dreams.

I am a dance teacher with many years of experience in dance education, but more importantly, I am a witness. I have witnessed how, under the guidance of Professor Zhitao Pan and through years of hard work, the Pan America Chinese Dance Alliance has become the best platform for dance enthusiasts and professionals to showcase their dreams. This platform includes the Chinese Folk Ethnic Dance Grade Test, dance competitions, master classes, dance showcases, and various other large-scale teaching and practical activities related to dance. The Pan America Chinese Dance Alliance has put in arduous efforts to build up from scratch and has reaped fruitful results. The PACDA community will continue to unite and strive together, dancing forward for our beloved passion.

I deeply thank our friends and family who have provided us with strong support throughout this journey. I appreciate the guidance and support of our experts and scholars, as well as the efforts and enthusiasm of our dance professionals and dance enthusiasts. We embrace the same goal and passion as we pursue our dreams of beautiful dance in different countries. May the Pan America Chinese Dance Alliance achieve even greater success! Thank you all for your support! Wishing everyone successful work and a beautiful life.”

From the President of the PACDA Board 2022-2024, Jin Chen.

About PACDA

The Pan America Chinese Dance Alliance (PACDA) is a non-profit organization that aims to connect the global Chinese dance community by empowering individuals through opportunity and performance. By connecting Chinese dancers, teachers worldwide, and dance professionals in China together in cross-cultural exchanges and events, PACDA seeks to improve the overall experience of learning, teaching, and performing Chinese dance.

Founded in 2015 with the hopes of spreading the beauty of Chinese dance internationally, PACDA has connected individuals across the globe together and has gained the support of thousands. Now, PACDA collaborates with dance students, teachers, and groups from locations such as Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Singapore, Japan, and Australia, and still hopes to expand its mission to an even greater audience.

For centuries, Chinese dance has been a source of beauty and truth that continues to spread joy across the world and inspire future generations.  Originally seen solely as cultural entertainment by outsiders, Chinese dance is now renowned for its beauty as it continues to touch the lives of people everywhere. Though the 56 officially recognized ethnic groups in China each have its unique history and culture, they all unite through the collective spirit of the Chinese people. Through Chinese folk dance, their cultures are told from physical movement. Through Chinese classical dance, history is reflected and stories are celebrated. These moments are the core of PACDA.

PACDA is also the organizer of some of the most well-known events for Chinese dance overseas, among them: PACDA is the organizer of the Taoli World Dance Competition which is the world’s largest competition that features Chinese dance styles and beyond; PACDA is the official North American organizer of The Chinese Folk & Ethnic Dance Certification Exam authorized by the Beijing Chinese Folk & Ethnic Dancers Association, and PACDA is the parent organization for the Chinese Dance Company of Southern California (CDCSC) in collaboration with the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center (SCCCC). With each endeavor, PACDA hopes to inspire the new generation to find their own meaning in Chinese dance by giving them the opportunity for self-expression through a shared passion.

This esteemed event provides a global platform and a vibrant community for passionate dancers worldwide, offering them a distinguished opportunity to showcase their exceptional talents and connect with like-minded individuals who share their profound dedication to the art form.

At the Festival’s core is the renowned Taoli World Dance Competition (TLWD) World Finals, a thrilling annual culmination of TLWD where outstanding contestants from seasonal competitions gather on an international stage to display their remarkable skills. TLWD serves as a platform to highlight the achievements of dancers and dance instructors from around the world. Through live critiques by experts in dance education, participants receive constructive feedback to enhance their teaching and performance abilities, as well as encouragement for original choreographies. These intentional learning experiences and meaningful interactions foster the growth of the global dance community, enabling dancers to push the boundaries of their craft with resounding brilliance.

Complementing the competition is the enhanced PACDA Summer Intensive, an extended version of the TLWD Master Classes. Guided by renowned experts in the field, including the esteemed Taoli World Judges and Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company, these rigorous training sessions offer aspiring dancers an unparalleled opportunity to refine their techniques, broaden their artistic horizons, and immerse themselves in a world of inspiration and personal growth.

Culminating the Festival is the captivating Pan America Multicultural Dance Gala. The Gala serves as a triumphant convergence of the most exceptional talents, exemplifying the zenith of multicultural dance excellence.

About SCCCC

South Coast Chinese Cultural Association (SCCCA) was founded in 1977 as a non-profit organization. Our mission is to preserve Chinese heritage, to enrich our life with cultural diversity, and to integrate into the mainstream society. Under SCCCA, there are four functional groups, the Irvine Chinese School, ICS Parent-Teacher Organization, the Irvine Chinese Chorus, and the Second Generation Association. Currently, we have approximately seven hundred member families in the greater South Orange County area. Vital to our accomplishments are generous support and donations of countless volunteers. Our programs rely on over 20,000 volunteer hours every year.

SCCCA offers various arts, musical, and athletic programs and performances to the public. Many of our cultural activities have been passed down for thousands of years and are still a living part of our daily life. Our programs include Chinese Brush Painting, Chinese Calligraphy, Chinese Knotting, Tai Chi Chuan and Sword, Mu Lan Chuan and Sword, Ping-Pong, Basketball, Badminton, Yoga, Chinese computer, Book Discussion, Chorus, Strings Orchestra, and Ballroom Dance. In addition to participation in the Southern California Chinese American Athletic Competition and the Irvine Public Schools Foundation activities. SCCCA sponsors events such as annual banquet, scholarship program, golf tournament, and family camping trips, and also holds Candidates Forums for candidates running for Irvine City Council and IUSD positions during election years. Expanding beyond SCCCA activities, our members also actively support many community events.

In the heart of SCCCA, Irvine Chinese School (ICS) has over one thousand students from K through 12th grade. The School meets on Saturdays / Sundays and enrollment is open to all children and adults who are interested in learning Chinese language, culture, and customs. For high school students, ICS offers extracurricular credits of Chinese language that are recognized by school districts of Garden Grove, Los Alamitos, Anaheim, Orange, Huntington Beach, Irvine, Newport-Mesa, Tustin, and Capistrano.

SCCCA started to build the Chinese Cultural Center as our permanent campus since fall of 2003 at 9 Truman in Irvine. Thanks for all the donations and many volunteers’ efforts and dedications, on April 24th, 2005, SCCCA held the Grand Opening for South Coast Chinese Cultural Center. At last, we can set foot onto a campus that we can call our own. This facility is open seven days a week. In addition to weekend Chinese school programs, we offer weekday community classes and after-school programs for children. Owning our own campus presents a tremendous opportunity to ensure the execution of our missions and the stability of our programs, to reach out to broader populations, and to meet the emerging needs of our community. As we enter this historical period of our organization and for the Chinese Americans, our vision is crystal clear. It is focused on how Chinese culture and language program can be best deployed to meet the community needs.

Description

Whirlwind is a phenomenon in the desert caused by the air coming from the mountains to the plain in different directions.  This dance Whirlwind takes inspiration from the choreographer’s journey on the Silk Road which begins in China and passes through Central Asia, connecting China to Europe, crossing many deserts and mountains.  It was the pathway not only connecting trade and merchandise but also cultures, art and religions of many countries.  In Central Asia, some believe Whirlwind is the manifestation of the great breath, the divine energy of the universe.  Whirlwind is an exploration of movements based on trance, rhythmic breathing, sound and spiral motion.
